When Death Comes Knocking at Your Door

The one thing about death is that we all will die. However, somehow it still at times catches us off guard. Lysa Terkeurst has written a blog piece for (in)courage titled Dealing with Deep Grief. She writes,

Losing someone you love can cut into your heart so viciously it forever redefines who you are and how you think. It’s what I call deep grief.”

If you have ever lost someone you love you can relate to Terkeurst’s words on loss:

For me, the last past couple of years have been one loss after another. And just when you feel like you can live without this person another death comes and at times knocks you off your feet again. And you have to start the process of loss again and reconcile with it yet again.

Terkeurst describes deep grief as a blanket that can one day be removed, folded, and tucked away. There is no need to hate or resist it anymore she says, “For, underneath it, wondrous things have happened over time. Things that could only have come about when Divine Hope intersects with a broken world.”

The bible tells us in 1st Thes. 4:13, brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.

We as Christians at times have a hard time with this scripture because the loss of a loved one can be unbearable. That does not mean we don't have hope. But it means we are filled with grief.

For me, when a loved one dies as a Christian I mourn, but I know I will see them again. The pain of that loss is palpable.

Mourning is natural. It is painful. We are no less of a Christian if we mourn. When we mourn that means we loved the person and hate to see them leave. But we hope that we will see them again.

I Love what Jack Thorne wrote; Those we love never truly leave us. There are things that death can not touch.

So again, it's ok to grieve for your loved one that is a natural thing to do. But as you grieve know that God is with you every step of the way.
