I ran a couple of Christian women groups at the time of George Floyd's death. With the subsequent protests that erupted worldwide and the heartache of watching the murder on live TV, it was obvious that many of us were dealing with trauma and despair.  We were heartbroken and worried about the safety of our sons, brothers, husbands, uncles, and daughters. Some of us wondered why churches we belonged to were not saying or doing anything about this universal outcry for justice and an end to racism.

Some of us tried to have conversations with our churches to seek the support we needed. But many were more caught up in politics and the election than being able to feel our pain.  This closed their hearts and ears to our heartache. Some of us felt abandoned, and many of us had to leave churches we loved, served, and supported for many years to find new places to worship and heal.

It was then I thought, why should we wait on the church when we, as Christian women, are the church. We are a part of his body and have been given power and weapons to tear down strongholds.  It occurred to me that with the help of the Holy Spirit if I could get white women and black women and every other race for that matter together to talk, learn, share, grieve, lament to grow and heal, we would be doing the work of Christ himself.

Jesus calls for his church to be one. In 1 Corinthians 12:12 he tells us though the body is made up of many parts, it is one.  1 Corinthians 12:13  says we were all baptized into one body. Galatians 3:28 says we are one in Christ and so on and so on - all over our bible, God's word is clear "be one as he is one". Well if we are supposed to be one, then we need to act like it. We've got to figure this out because a house divided against itself cannot stand Mark 3:25. Our father pronounced this of Peter in Matthew 16:18 he said "Thou art Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. That gives us the assurance that we will be victorious, despite what we see.

So on Sunday, Oct. 24th, 2020, we held our first Sisters In Christ meeting, where black women and white women spoke about race. Scary, yes, not sure how it would go, for sure, but as you can imagine, when you allow the holy spirit to do his work, we were blessed by the experience. We create a safe space where uncomfortable questions and even questions described as dumb can be asked and answered.  We discuss and share our different perspectives. We speak the truth in love and do not condemn anyone as there's no condemnation in Christ Jesus.

Since that first meeting, women have joined us to experience our sisterhood and learn about racial issues and how we can help to combat racism.  And it has been amazing to watch the holy spirit move in our lives.  God is so amazing.

Our group is made up of some of the most incredible, beautiful and amazing women; all of whom I'm proud to call a Sister in Christ.

Sisterhood - that is, primary and bonding love from women - is, like motherhood, a capacity, not a destiny. It must be chosen, excercised by acts of will.
